Paying for Therapy

One of the first questions many people ask is whether I accept their insurance.  Although some of our therapy affiliates may be on insurance panels, at the Back Bay Analytic Group, we have elected not to accept third-party payment for services.  We think with a little more explanation, you’ll agree that this is a good thing.  Plain and simple, when you pay us directly, we work for you;  when insurance is involved, we’re also working for them… And their priorities and ours don’t always agree.

We think insurance puts an unwanted strain on our relationship in therapy.  For example, insurance requires:

  • A mandatory diagnosis of a mental condition
  • A standardized treatment plan according to insurance guidelines
  • Written records of our sessions that are open to an “audit” and review by insurance personnel

At Back Bay Analytic Group, your therapist won’t diagnose you with any medical or psychological condition.  Our method of treatment is unique for each person and evolves over the course of our therapeutic work together.  We’re free to work with you as experienced professionals to make judgements about intervention, frequency, and duration of therapy without having to justify this work to outsiders.

Working directly with our patients is also much more confidential.  You don’t have to worry about an insurance company meddling in your business.  No concerns about records that an employer or investigator would discover.  While we may keep notes to refresh our recollection of progress made over time, we’ll never share these.   Your case notes are confidential and secured.

And finally, we’re not distracted by the administrative burden of billing or concerned about chasing down payment for your treatment.  That means we have more time to focus on what matters – helping you.  On your side, we find that people paying out-of-pocket are more dedicated to the process which helps them achieve better results.  With the financial responsibility in your hands, you are more directly invested in the process and outcomes.

So, how much does therapy cost?  We are committed to offering psychoanalytic therapy to our community, and we work with individuals to make it affordable.  After our initial consultation, we’ll discuss fees and determine a mutually agreeable solution.  This is based on several factors including how many times per week or month you’d like to come, and your current financial situation.  Fees are discussed periodically as these factors change.
